We do not learn too much about the significant other specifically, but the speaker does spend the majority of the loving and the breaking walking though their relationships ups and downs. It is also implied that her father is absent due to his alcoholism. When the speaker does mention her father she often writes about his absence as well as his power over her mother. The father plays a smaller role in milk & honey. This is clear when she writes, 'when my mother opens her mouth to speak at dinner my father shoves the word hush between her lips.' The Father The speaker shows these norms through the relationship between her mother and her father. The speaker often writes of the lack of power her mother has in her marriage. The mother acts as a reference for conservative, traditional cultural norms, especially as they relate to gender relations. The speaker has a complicated relationship with her mother. She does reference interactions with others, like her mother or significant other, as they relate to her own journey toward healing and self-love. The speaker in the poems is a young woman learning about the complexities of relationships both with herself and others.
